Highlights of my trip to Marrakech

1. The Souks markets of Marrakech

In the souks in the medina you can buy almost anything - from spices to shoes, jellabas to kaftans, tea pots to tagines and much, much more. The shops are filled with various colorful goods.

2. Place Djemaa El-Fna

Djemaa El-Fna is the highlight of any Marrakech night. Musicians, dancers, and story tellers pack this square at the heart of the medina, filling it with a cacophony of drum beats and excited shouts. Numerous food stalls provide the hungry in the evening with all your heart desires.

3. Majorelle Gardens

A sub-tropical garden restored by French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and formerly created by the artist Jacques Majorelle, is a beauty. The park boasts a collection of plants from across the globe, including what seems like every cactus species on the planet. Majorelle's former studio in the garden now houses a museum of Islamic arts and crafts.

4. Marrakesch Museum

The building itself is the main reason for visiting this beautiful museum, a former 19th century palace - the tile work and general decor are spectacular.

5. Ben Youssef Medersa

The Ben Youssef Medersa, an Islamic school attached to the Ben Youssef Mosque, is home to some of the most beautiful art and architecture in Marrakech. Above the central courtyard are the tiny student dormitories. Nearly 900 students were once housed here, and it's difficult to imagine how they all squeezed in.
